ACL Reconstruction

The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) is an important ligament in the knee joint. It provides stability to the knee especially when performing twisting and turning activities during sports. When an ACL injury occurs, the knee becomes unstable. This instability can make returning to sports difficult, and may make the knee more prone to developing meniscus and cartilage tears, which may lead to future problems of knee arthritis.

How do know if your ACL is injured? You will hear a “pop” sound, followed by immediate swelling and pain that will stop you from continuing your activity. See a doctor as soon as possible for a diagnosis and proper treatment.

Depending on the severity of injury, treatment can include ACL reconstruction (single bundle or double bundle) and/or associated repair of accompanying meniscus and cartilage injuries. Physiotherapy is also recommended for full recovery of your injury. If diagnosed and treated early, the potential of getting back to your sports earlier is better.

Other knee consultations include collateral ligament injuries, complex multi-knee ligamentous injuries and knee arthritis.
